Harpsichord maker Martin Skowroneck is one of the pioneers of historical instrument building in Germany. Self-taught, he began with freely designed new constructions but soon recognized the merits of those instruments from the golden age of harpsichord making. The study and restauration of original instruments from museums and private collections has enabled him, step by step, to unearth the working methods of the old masters. Mr. Skowronecks instruments, built on these principles, continue to be played by leading harpsichordists.

Based on his own practical experience, this book focusses on many important aspects of building new harpsichords in the historical manner. Construction principles, working methods and the selection of materials are explained in depth and rounded off with numerous tips from the craftman´s workshop.
