There is an abundance of literature written on piano making which is, however, usually too crammed with detail and theory to be of any practical use to piano technicians engaged in day-to-day servicing of instruments. Hence the need for a manual that provides practical hints and assistance both to the technician and purchaser. The specific features of a piano tend to vary from make to make and call for careful observation in order to warrant optimum functioning of the instrument. Like anything else, a musical instrument is only as good as the amount of care that is taken to preserve it. The information given in this book has been compiled with the object of keeping a Steinway in, or restoring it to its original state. The various operations are described in the order normally adhered to when servicing instruments at the factory. To make repairs easier the lengths of measure of each model have been determined and recorded in tabular form. Among the pianos not only the current models, but also those which are not produced any more have been included because often the latter are still matter of service.
